Concrete Crack Width Measurement Using a Laser Beam and Image Processing Algorithms

The presence of concrete cracks in structures indicates possible structural deterioration, but it is quite difficult to measure crack width accurately. While much research has been conducted on detection using image processing, there a gap the accurate quantification millimeters. Current methods either pixels or require attachment scales markers onto measured surface, which can pose safety hazards hard-to-reach areas. This paper addresses these issues by proposing novel image-based method for measuring millimeters laser beam and processing. proposed was validated laboratory capturing images with two cameras different resolutions, each attached lasers. lasers projected circular surface under inspection. were then pre-processed, segmented, skeletonized measurement pixels. relationship between diameter camera distance from used convert performed high accuracy, as indicated absolute error. largest error 0.57 mm, while smallest 0.02 mm. allows real-world interpretation results As result, widths easily be compared allowable limits international standards, are typically expressed metric SI units. also promote safer inspections areas low accessibility attaching devices such drones.
